Plácido Domingo Conducts the Russian Superstar Ildar Abdrazakov. The Kennedy Center Opera House – October 3, 2009

PlacidoDomingo

what

Last seen in WNO’s 2007 production of Don Giovanni, Ildar Abdrazakov makes a triumphant return to Washington with his wife Olga Borodina for this special one-night performance. Known for her portrayal of Eboli, Amneris, Carmen and Dalila, Borodina is one of the most sought after mezzo-sopranos performing at all major opera houses. Plácido Domingo conducts the Russian superstar duo in an intimate evening of Italian, French and Russian opera arias at The Kennedy Center Opera House.

“…to watch Borodina is to see the masterful emergence of a truly human, fully formed character, in all its vicissitudes and foibles, buttressed by some of the most luxurious, thrilling vocalism that one can hope to encounter in an opera house.” ~ Opera News

Music of Spanish Composers Enrique Granados & Tomas de Victoria. The National Gallery of Art – October 11, 2009

piano

what

The National Gallery of Art (NGA) presents music from Spain in its Sunday concerts with pieces by Tomas de Victoria and Enrique Granados, featuring the CHORAL ARTS SOCIETY and the pianist DOUGLAS RIVA, a specialist in Granados music whose repertory has one of the least known pieces of the Spanish composer.

Rive will play THE SONG OF THE START, a piece that has only been performed twice since Granados composed it: the first time, it was Granados himself who played it 1911 at the PALACIO DE LA MUSICA in Barcelona, together with the first performance of his GOYESCAS. The singers were from the ORFEO CATALA.

Short thereafter, Granados traveled to the US and died on his return trip when his ship was torpedoed by a German U boat. The score ended up at a music publisher in New York where it was feared destroyed years later by a fire. It was not the case because in 2004 Douglas Riva identified the manuscript there nd bought it and he was able to introduce it again to the public at the New York church VOICES OF ASCENSION in 2007.

THE SONG OF STARS is a composition for piano, chorus and organ. Riva, who spent several years in Barcelona studying Granados, will play it again at the NGA, where every Sunday there are excellent concerts of classical music and is providing an organ for the occasion. The Choral Arts Society will have its 52 singers.

Jazz Concert by Spain’s Music Director Gil-Ordóñez

Jazz Concert by Spain’s Music Director Gil-Ordóñez

gil-ordonez

what

Encounters: David Taylor
Angel Gil-Ordóñez has attained an outstanding reputation among Spain’s new generation of conductors as he carries on the tradition of his teacher and mentor, Sergiu Celibidache. The Washington Post has praised his conducting as “mesmerizing” and “as colorfully textured as a fauvist painting.” Currently the

Post-Classical Ensemble brings to DC a pair of unclassifiable, widely recorded artists prominent both in jazz and classical circles. Both are fixtures of the edgy jazz scene in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The virtuoso bass trombonist David Taylor began his jazz career playing with the likes of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis, and with the Gil Evans and Charles Mingus Big Bands. More recently, he has toured with Winton Marsalis. When he is not composing for the Berlin Philharmonic or Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, the composer/saxophonist Daniel Schnyder tours widely with a trio also including Taylor and the pianist Kenny Drew, Jr.; their repertoire ranges from Bach to Ellington to Schnyder.

Tickets:  $25, $35, $10 (Students only)

Traditional Spanish Musical – Zarzuela “Bohemios + La boheme Act 3″

Traditional Spanish Musical – Zarzuela “Bohemios + La boheme Act 3″

zarzuela-bohemios

what

Traditional Spanish Musical – Zarzuela “Bohemios + La boheme Act 3″
Concert Version of Amadeo Vives’s zarzuela “Bohemios”, featuring soprano Sophia Benedetti and tenor Alvaro Rodriguez among others. After “Bohemios,” Zarzuela Di Si will present Act 3 of Puccini’s “La boheme.”

The Spanish Zarzuela is a traditional Spanish musical genre which is frequently compared to the works of Gilbert and Sullivan and the Viennese operettas of Johann Strauss. But that comparison also frequently does not reflect the fact that, instead of a dozen or so such works, literally thousands of zarzuelas were written (nearly a hundred of them are still in the current repertoire).

The origin of the zarzuela dates back to the mid-17th Century. Legend says the name originates from a pavillon overgrown with blackberry bushes (zarzas), in a remote section of Madrid’s El Prado Park. Actors gathered at this pavillon to present their plays and to entertain King Philip IV and his entourage. In 1657, the King and Queen attended there the first performance of a comedy by the poet Pedro Calderón de la Barca with music composed by Juan de Hidalgo: El Laurel de Apolo (Apollo’s Laurel). The event gave birth to the music from that would later be called la zarzuela. This vibrant and often picaresque music tradition surged to popularity in the second half of the 19th Century.

Zarzuela Di Si’s mission is to produce high quality zarzuela for the Washington, DC area audiences. We will present standard and non-standard zarzuela, and Spanish opera, both in traditional and non-traditional settings.
